Kevin DeYoung and Greg Gilbert published a book fairly recently entitled What is the Mission of the Church? In the book they argue, rightly I think, that the mission of the church is to make disciples. At first glance that seems like a no-brainer. However, there was backlash over the book because critics felt that they underemphasized the place of social justice and good works within the ministries of the Church. DeYoung and Gilbert clearly articulate that it is good for local churches to be involved in things like helping third world countries get clean water and providing shoes for people that do not have them. These are good things. However, they are not the mission of the church, though they should naturally overflow from the church's mission. They want to be explicit about the mission of the church. Kevin DeYoung just wrote about blog post about this. Check it out. You may find it helpful.
